BIG DATA COLLECTION FOR A MORE ACCURATE DANGER PREDICTION

Knowledge about the layers of a snow cover is essential for a precise and reliable avalanche forecast. Commonly this knowledge is gathered through a manual process, either consisting of the creation of a snow profile or by utilising some form of penetrometer. To conduct these measurements the person needs to be at the measuring site him- or herself, which makes data collection time consuming. Further the desired measuring site may also be at a location where it is too dangerous to carry out a measurement. In this report a new measuring technique is proposed, allowing a fast and extensive analysis of a certain slope or area. The analysis is thereby conducted with the aid of a drone. The report first analyses the current state-of-the-art and then conceptualises different possible approaches. In a next step the chosen concept is further developed and designed. In a final step the system is manufactured and tested according to the set requirements. The developed system, containing of hardware (drone- and measurement system) and software (visualisation system), facilitates snow layer analysis and allows investigation into the spatial variability of the snow composition. The system aims to improve avalanche forecasting precision.
